GMU 621 (Olympic) help!
« on: June 23, 2011, 07:26:28 AM »
This year I got picked for a special hunt for the first time in my life. I got picked for a bull tag in GMU 621 (Olympic unit). I want to start scouting, but I have no idea where to even start looking. I know there is a lot of private land around this area too.  Any help on where to go would be greatly appreciated!

The Sequim Bull herd looks real good this year. My sons and I saw them about 3 weeks ago. 22 of them, looked like many of them are going to sport real good bone too, growing nice and heavy and straight out from their heads. They were in Olympic, but still inside the "No Shooting" zone. (Permission doesn't even help, you simply can't use ANY weapon in the zone.)

Likely a few bands around Quilcene too, but you need to find and follow them same as here.

When they join up with the cows in this herd, they're usually in the Coyle unit (N of the Highway.) on private land. Finding them during your season in Olympic is a gamble, you just never know.

A friend of mine drew an archery tag several years ago and found them S of Discovery bay. He tagged an absolute MONSTER! (Had a 3rd antler!) Mass like your upper arm! He found and followed them for a month or more before the season.

When is your season?

Looks to be some info already on the site from years past. I did a quick search and found some. Try that.

Congrats on the tag.  What weapon is the tag for, and what do you plan on using?  There are a few herds in that area, but they can scatter around.  If the Sequim herd is any indication, it looks like it might be a good year for antler growth.  Reason I ask about weapon, is there are a couple of areas that won't allow a modern rifle, but muzzleloaders are okay...and the bulls like to lay in the grass next to the shores of the Hood Canal.

Archery, Muzzleloader, Or Modern. I know where the Olympic unit is located I live there. We watch them probably four nights a week. Depending on which one he has he will need to look in different areas due to there travel routes. I know these Elk very well. Two weeks puts these elk three drainages over!!!

A few areas you might want to take a look at on a map or research with others.
The Lena Lakes area--there are some that work their way down the Hamma Hamma, it is located on FS land.
Dosewallips area--I usually see them along Dosewallips Rd.  I've seen the elk in the pastures upriver, in people's yards, in the lawn by the school.  They wander all around that area.  If you go up Dosewallips Rd to Rocky Brook Rd, there is an old clearcut in that area that they like to feed in at times.  If you go up to the washout and into the national forest, there is a small bridge that goes over to the Brothers Wilderness.  I haven't seen them, but have found sign in that area--mostly in a large alder grove across from the washout.  In the colder months, they like to hangout at the state park.
The elk seem to like to stay low and near sources of water (although I've heard some have been seen near Silver Lake near Tubal Cain Mine--kind of a stretch, my guess deer).

Wow, thanks for all the advice! I just found out about this site, I'm not much of a computer person. It sounds like I messed up by being a new member and asking for advice????????????????????? Anyways, I drew a modern rifle bull tag for this area. I have actually camped a lot up at the hamma hamma, but I've never seen an elk up there. I was told yesterday by a guy I work with that I should see a fair amount of 4 pointers and 5 pointers around the Brinnon area.....

It looks to me like this is a great website, and I plan to stick around for good and share my hunt!
